Iconic Atari turns 40, tries to stay relevant

(AP) ? A scruffy, young Steve Jobs worked at Atari before he founded Apple. "Pong," one of the world's first video games, was born there, as was "Centipede," a classic from the era of quarter-guzzling arcade machines. "Call of Duty" creator Activision was started by four of Atari's former game developers.

The iconic video game company turns 40 years old this week, much slimmer these days as it tries to stay relevant in the age of "Angry Birds" and "Words With Friends."

But Atari's influence on today's video games is pervasive.

Although it wasn't the first company to make video games, Atari was the first to make a lasting impression on an entire generation. At arcades ? or at video game bars such as Barcade in the trendy Williamsburg section of Brooklyn ? nostalgic patrons still gather around such Atari classics as "Asteroids," ''Joust" and "Centipede."

The Atari 2600, launched in 1977, was the first video game console in millions of homes, long before the Nintendo Entertainment System (1985), Sony's PlayStation (1994) and Microsoft's Xbox (2001).

Today's younger iPhone gamers might not remember how "Pong," that simple, two-dimensional riff on Ping-Pong, swept across living rooms and arcades in the 1970s. But they might recognize elements of it in easy-to-learn, hard-to-master games based on simple physics ? among them, "Angry Birds."

"For tens of millions of Gen X-ers, or kids who grew up in America in the '70s and '80s, Atari is a cultural icon, an intrinsic part of childhood," says Scott Steinberg, tech analyst and author of "The Modern Parent's Guide to Kids and Video Games."

"Pong," he adds, was in some ways the very first social video game, one designed to play in bars, at home or at an arcade, while spectators crowded around to watch the action.

Launched in 1972 from Atari's Silicon Valley headquarters, "Pong" featured a basic black-and-white screen (that's black and white only, no shades of gray here), divided by a dotted line. Short white lines on either side stood in for paddles. Two players controlled them and tried to get a moving dot ? the ball ? past their opponent.

With "Pong," Atari introduced video games to the masses just as Apple and Microsoft ushered in the personal computer era by bringing computers to people's desktops in the 1980s.

"It makes me think that I am getting really old," says Nolan Bushnell, the co-founder of Atari. "I'm 69, which means I was 29 when I founded Atari. It seems really young in retrospect."

It doesn't take much effort these days to see 20-something entrepreneurs in technology. Mark Zuckerberg was just 19 when he started Facebook in his Harvard dorm room. But back in the early '70s, Bushnell said, "no one in their 20s started companies. In some ways it paved the way for Apple, Microsoft and those guys."

Bushnell said Atari succeeded early on because it nurtured ideas from its engineers and computer programmers.

"We dominated not because of our manufacturing and marketing prowess but because of creativity," Bushnell says. "The lasting legacy: That creativity is a real weapon. And in some ways Apple has shown that as well."

Jobs was just 19 when Atari hired him as a technician, making $5 an hour. He worked the night shift because many of his co-workers didn't get along with him and didn't appreciate his refusal to wear deodorant, according to Walter Isaacson's recent biography of the late Apple chief executive.

He wasn't there for long ? he left the company in 1974 to travel to India and co-founded Apple two years later, in 1976.

Dona Bailey, one of the creators of "Centipede," recalls a notebook that Atari had with maybe 30 ideas for games in it.

"Most of them were laser games," says Bailey, who was the only female programmer in Atari's arcade division when she was hired in 1980 and when she left in 1982. "I wasn't really interested in war, or lasering anything, or violence."

The only ideas in the notebook that didn't have to do with "lasering things or frying things" were two sentences about a multi-segmented insect that walks out on the screen and winds its way down the screen toward the player, she says. There was implicit shooting, as the player at the bottom had to destroy the insect before getting hit by it, but "it didn't seem that bad to shoot a bug."

Thus, "Centipede" was born.

Atari, Steinberg says, pioneered a lot of the concepts that are popular in gaming today: Games should be for both men and women, and they should be social by allowing many people to compete with each other.

Atari "defined games as not just a product but a social movement," Steinberg says.

But there is a generational divide. For kids born in the '80s and later, Atari elicits a respectful nod as a retro video game icon at best ? and a clueless shrug at worst.

"It may rise again, but it remains to be seen whether Atari's place is among retail giants (such as) Activision and Electronic Arts," Steinberg says, "Or in a future that is defined by its own past."

Activision, which now makes such hit games as "Call of Duty" and "Diablo III," was founded in 1979 by four disgruntled Atari game designers who wanted more recognition for their work.

As Activision's future rose, Atari's faltered. Having cemented video games as a form of mass entertainment, Atari was sold to Warner Communications Inc. in 1976 and began to pile up big losses.

Warner, now part of Time Warner Inc., discontinued the Atari 2600 and fired Bushnell, says Stephen Jacobs, professor of interactive games and media at the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, N.Y.

Meanwhile, several companies tried to capitalize on Atari's success, but flooded the market with terrible products. It was a gold rush, with little gold to be had.

Atari contributed to that decline in quality with "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial," still considered one of the worst video games ever made ? and that's being generous.

"They tried to push something out in six weeks," Jacobs says. "They pushed out a million units of a horrible game that they were sure was just going to be the bomb. And it ended up tanking Atari."

That was the Christmas of 1982. What followed is now referred to as the "great video game crash of 1983." People stopped buying video games.

Companies began collapsing and Atari was soon sold to a man named Jack Tremiel. Over the next decade, Atari made computers, a game console called Jaguar and a handheld game machine called the Lynx. None were hits.

Atari was then passed to the toy company Hasbro, then to Infogrames Entertainment, a French company that owns it today.

Recognizing the promise of mobile devices and its best-known titles, Atari today makes such phone games as "Centipede: Origins" and "Breakout Boost," a take on the game Steve Jobs worked on back in the day.

"The legacy is that Atari is essentially where it all began," says Jim Wilson, the company's current CEO.

So is Atari living off its legacy?

"To a certain point almost all entertainment companies are doing a bunch of living on their legacy. That's why we have 'sequel-itis' in triple-A games, movies, books," Jacobs says. "Why invest in new things when you can beat the old things to death and still make money out of them?"

The AMPLIFI Hose Powering and Storage System :: A Review

The folks over at Briggs & Stratton contacted Building Moxie to see if we would be interested in reviewing their new AMPLIFI hose powering and storage system. Seems JB and Barry were a little backed up so the Agents to Moxie were called in. And since I have seen this system for sale at Lowe?s so I jumped at the chance to test it out.

Amplifi hose powering system packed with hose + the Amplifi gunAMPLIFI is a first of its kind versatile watering and cleaning system that features an electronic motor and pump, and five setting spray nozzle with Detergent-on-Demand.? And it comes in a durable portable storage container. Sounds good to me, let?s see what this thing can do!

The weather has been a bit uncooperative with lots of rain here in Florida since I got the system, but I was able to sneak out and give it a try on the small and dirty concrete patio at my back door. For hook up, attach the supply hose to a water spigot, hook up a heavy duty garden hose (a cheap hose won?t work ? it needs to have a 400psi burst rating), plug in the motor and you?re ready to go. It was easy.

AMPLIFI hook up to-hose and changing the sprayerIn my case, I have some algae growing here, so I put some Simple Green (better for the environment than bleach and it won?t kill your grass) in the Detergent-on-Demand reservoir, for a pre-soak first. I turned on the water, flipped the power switch and that was it. No bothering with gas or starting a motor. The first things I noticed was that the electric motor is extremely quiet and the adjustable nozzle works nicely. The trigger handle was comfortable and the detergent button was also.

AMPLIFI pre-soak feature and Power Spray

Time to blast away the dirt and grime! The electric motor helps AMPLIFI bust out twice the water at 4.5 times the force of a typical garden hose. Here you can see the striations where I had blasted the concrete and left streaks even spraying and crossing the pattern up in the opposite direction. Next thing I knew my patio was nice and clean again.

A quick switch of the nozzle and I hose down the house and sliding glass door. This shows why I like this system so much ? it?s versatility. You can go from cleaning your driveway to washing your car to watering your plants. The storage container rolls easily with its detachable handle and can hold up to 75 feet of hose, making it easy to work around the whole house.

AMPLIFI System used for cleaning a sliding glass window

Briggs & Stratton has been known to us for years as the largest producer of gas powered engines for outdoor power equipment and is a brand I look for when purchasing equipment for their reliability and dependability. AMPLIFI keeps up with their good name. I found it retailing for $199 at Lowe?s and they also carry the AMPLIFI line of cleaners. Check it out and I know you?ll be happy with your purchase!

Security officials testify against Iraq's VP

(AP) ? Police and army officers told a court they found a pistol silencer in the home of Iraq's fugitive vice president as testimony continued Tuesday in a terror trial that has deepened a split in the country's government.

Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, one of Iraq's highest-ranking Sunni politicians, is accused of running death squads made up of bodyguards who allegedly carried out bombings and shootings against Shiites. The Baghdad court hearing the case adjourned Tuesday after hearing a few hours of testimony.

Al-Hashemi denies wrongdoing, saying the charges are part of a political vendetta by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a Shiite whom critics accuse of sidelining his Sunni and Kurdish opponents to consolidate power. Some Shiite politicians also are calling for al-Maliki's ouster.

Al-Hashemi is a longtime and vocal critic of al-Maliki, whose government issued a warrant for the vice president's arrest on terror charges the day after U.S. troops left Iraq last December.

Shortly after the warrant was issued, al-Hashemi fled to the Kurdish-run region in Iraq's north. He is currently in Turkey and refuses to return for the trial.

Tuesday's witnesses, three police and two army officers, said they raided al-Hashemi's Baghdad home in April after he fled and found a silencer for a pistol. A separate raid in February on the home of his son-in-law and office manager, Ahmed Qahtan, turned up another silencer, they testified.

In earlier testimony, al-Hashemi's former bodyguards had told the court that Qahtan gave to them guns with silencers and told them to assassinate an army brigadier general. Qahtan also faces terror charges.

So far, al-Hashemi's defense lawyers have not presented their case or called witnesses. However, his defense team was back on Tuesday after walking out in protest in the second court session late last month, citing judicial bias.

The next court session is scheduled for July 8.

Also Tuesday, police and health officials said three federal policemen were fatally shot at a security checkpoint in the northern city of Mosul, located 360 kilometers (225 miles) northwest of Baghdad. The attackers fled before they could be captured, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the information.

Baseball: Bobby Kuntzendorf named Beacon-News Player of the Year

Despite compiling arguably the greatest career in Aurora Christian history ? and a senior year worthy of a repeat nod as The Beacon-News Player of the Year ? all Bobby Kuntzendorf can think about is how it ended.

He rolled into the Class 2A Coal City Sectional semifinals at 10-0, putting together a 24-3 record in three varsity seasons on the mound. But it all fell apart late in a 7-4 loss to Herscher. Weeks later, it?s still fresh in Kuntzendorf?s mind.

?I think about it all the time still,? Kuntzendorf said. ?It?s that one outing every year that I don?t do well and it came in an unfortunate situation. When we got to the park, I just felt weird. I had that throwing error to third that opened everything up. We fell apart from there. But I wouldn?t have changed anything. I love all the guys I played with.?

Sure, it was a bitter ending for Kuntzendorf and the Eagles, but he helped take the program for quite a ride the past three years. This season, the Eagles were 26-9. Kuntzendorf was a huge key, both on the mound and at the plate.

He wound up 10-1 with a 1.44 ERA and a 0.77 WHIP. In 63 1/3 innings, he struck out a whopping 117 batters, allowing 24 hits and walking 25. He threw no-hitters against East Aurora and Immaculate Conception. In short, he was dominant as usual.

?Every time out we expected double-digit strikeouts, a couple hits allowed, holding a team to very few runs if any and giving us an opportunity to win the game,? ACS coach Andy Zorger said. ?I guess I?d have to say (we expected it) based on his junior year being so dominant. It?s hard to expect somebody being undefeated until the last game of the year. Dominating stuff. We knew if we scored three or four runs, we would win the game.?

While this is not a lifetime achievement award, a look at his three-year stats is definitely in order. In 41 appearances (35 starts), the Northern Illinois recruit wound up 24-4 with a 1.17 ERA and an 0.90 WHIP. In 200 1/3 innings, he struck out a mind-boggling 343 batters, walked 84 and allowed 95 hits.

?It?s pretty cool,? Kuntzendorf said of his accomplishments. ?Honestly, instead of putting up those numbers, I would have rather gone to state and gotten a ring. But it?s cool to see the numbers. I hope I helped the younger kids out. I hope to see the program excel throughout the years to come.?

Kuntzendorf?s career as a hitter is likely done as he figures to focus on pitching at NIU, but he was one of the area?s best hitters for three years, too. He hit .365 with six home runs, 33 RBI and 30 runs scored this year. In his career, he hit .368 with 15 home runs, 25 doubles, 88 RBI and 70 runs scored in 274 at-bats.

?It?s too bad in a way, because he?s got the talent to be a position player as well,? Zorger said. ?With his pitching, I can see why (Northern) wants to focus on that.?

Kuntzendorf is on his way to starting the Huskies portion of his career already. He and the program?s other newcomers already had orientation in DeKalb last week.

?Of course I?m nervous,? Kuntzendorf said. ?It?s a huge jump. It?s a bigger setting than high school. I?m a little nervous, but I?m excited because I?m hoping to get a chance to play as a freshman.?

Desert Plant's Potent Chemical Cocktail Makes Mice Go 'Ptooey'

Samuni-Blank et. al., Current Biology, volume 22, number 13. Copyright Current Biology/Cell Press/YouTube

Next time you're in the Negev Desert and you come across a sweet mignonette bush, stop and listen. You might hear a tiny "Ptooey" from somewhere underneath.

In case you're not planning a trip to the Negev, then I'm here to tell you about something quite amazing that goes on between the plant and its pal, the spiny mouse that lives in the Middle Eastern deserts. The sweet mignonette (Ochradenus baccatus if you must know, and also called Taily Weed) has some nice little fleshy fruits growing on it. But you can't eat the fruit unless you do the "ptooey."

Here's how this bizarre twist of symbiotic behavior between mouse and mignonette works: The mignonette is as good a mixologist as you'll find in any trendy bar. It has two chemical weapons in its fruit: An enzyme in the flesh and a glucosinolate inside the fruit's seeds. Rule number one with these chemicals: DO NOT MIX! As you would when, say, you bite into the fruit and break open a seed inside. Because when that happens, the chemicals combine to create what is called a "mustard oil bomb."

?

The mustard oil bomb "has more punch than Grey Poupon," says Denise Dearing from the University of Utah, who did the study in Israel. It's potent. And it keeps most animals from chowing down on this tiny fruit. But not the spiny mouse. (See this video of the seed-spitting mouse in action.)

Dearing and scientists from the University of Utah and Israel observed the mouse delicately chewing the fruit and spitting out the seeds, unscathed. They're very, very careful about that. And that's exactly what the plant wants, if it can be said that plants "want" things. Unbroken seeds propagate more plants, broken ones don't. So the plant needs a predator that knows how to "ptooey" in order to disperse its seeds.

Spiny mice eat the fruit of the mignonette bush but spit out the seeds Michal Samuni-Blank/Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.

Spiny mice eat the fruit of the mignonette bush but spit out the seeds

The research paper appears in the latest edition of Current Biology.

The mouse-mignonette bush discovery is only the latest round of plants training animals to help them procreate. There are other plants that that tailor their seeds for a particular animal. The majestic Guanacaste tree in Central America has large, tough seeds. They have to go through a big herbivore's gut before they'll germinate. Not just any herbivore...horses teeth and stomachs ruin them. Cows are just right though. And there's no "ptooey" required.

(AP) ? His beating stunned the nation, left Los Angeles smoldering and helped reshape race relations and police tactics. And in a quavering voice on national television, Rodney King pleaded for peace while the city burned.

But peace never quite came for King ? not after the fires died down, after two of the officers who broke his skull multiple times were punished, after Los Angeles and its flawed police department moved forward. His life, which ended Sunday at age 47 after he was pulled from the bottom of his swimming pool, was a continual struggle even as the city he helped change moved on.

The images ? preserved on an infamous grainy video ? of the black driver curled up on the ground while four white officers clubbed him more than 50 times with batons ? became a national symbol of police brutality in 1991. More than a year later, when the officers' acquittals touched off one of the most destructive race riots in history, his scarred face and softspoken question ? "Can we all get along?" ? spurred the nation to confront its difficult racial history.

But while Los Angeles race relations and the city's police department made strides forward, King kept coming before police and courts, struggling with alcohol addiction and arrests, periodically re-appearing publicly for a stint on "Celebrity Rehab" or a celebrity boxing match. He spent the last months of his life promoting a memoir he titled "The Riot Within: From Rebellion to Redemption."

King was declared dead at a hospital after his fianc?e called 911 at 5:25 a.m. to say she found him submerged in the pool at his home in Rialto, about an hour's drive from Los Angeles. Officers found King in the deep end of the pool, pulled him out and tried unsuccessfully to revive him with CPR.

An autopsy was expected to determine the cause of death within two days; police found no alcohol or drug paraphernalia near the pool and said foul play wasn't suspected. King's next-door neighbor, Sandra Gardea, said that around 3 a.m., she heard music and someone "really crying, like really deep emotions. ... Like tired or sad, you know?"

"I then heard someone say, 'OK, Please stop. Go inside the house.' ... We heard quiet for a few minutes Then after that we heard a splash in the back."

King's death was a grim ending to a saga that began 21 years earlier when he fled from police after he was stopped for speeding. The 25-year-old, on parole from a robbery conviction had been drinking, which he later said led him to try to evade police. He was finally stopped by four Los Angeles police officers who struck him more than 50 times with their batons, kicked him and shot him with stun guns. He was left with 11 skull fractures, a broken eye socket and facial nerve damage.

A man who had quietly stepped outside his home to observe the commotion videotaped most of it and turned a copy over to a TV station. It was played over and over for the following year, inflaming racial tensions across the country.

It seemed that the videotape would be the key evidence to a guilty verdict against the officers, whose felony assault trial was moved to the predominantly white suburb of Simi Valley, Calif. Instead, on April 29, 1992, a jury with no black members acquitted three of the officers on state charges in the beating; a mistrial was declared for a fourth.

Violence erupted immediately, starting in Los Angeles. They lasted for three days, killing 55 people, injuring more than 2,000 and setting swaths of Los Angeles aflame, causing $1 billion in damage. Police, seemingly caught off-guard, were quickly outnumbered by rioters and retreated. As the uprising spread to the city's Koreatown area, shop owners armed themselves and engaged in running gun battles with looters.

King ? who said in his memoir that FBI agents had urged him to keep a low profile if the officers were acquitted, expecting violence ? appeared at a news conference on the third day, asking for an end to the uprising. "Can we all get along?" he asked ? a question the city and nation have struggled to answer ever since.

Although the four officers who beat King ? Stacey Koon, Theodore Briseno, Timothy Wind and Laurence Powell ? were acquitted of state charges, Koon and Powell were convicted of federal civil rights charges and were sentenced to more than two years in prison. King received a $3.8 million civil judgment; one of the jurors in the case, Cynthia Kelley, is his fianc?e.

But he quickly lost the money as he invested in a record label and other failed ventures. He was arrested multiple times for drunken driving ? including last summer in Riverside, Calif.

Despite his troubles, King remained upbeat as he confronted the 20 year anniversary of the LA riots and considered his legacy.

"America's been good to me after I paid the price and stayed alive through it all," he told The Associated Press in an interview earlier this year. "This part of my life is the easy part now."

He had three daughters and was engaged to Kelley.

He returned to the spotlight earlier this year as historians and news outlets explored the impact of the riots on its 20th anniversary, including the reforms made by the Los Angeles Police Department.

"Through all that he had gone through with his beating and his personal demons he was never one to not call for reconciliation and for people to overcome and forgive," Rev. Al Sharpton said Sunday. "History will record that it was Rodney King's beating and his actions that made America deal with the excessive misconduct of law enforcement."

Attorney Harland Braun, who represented one of the police officers, Briseno, in his federal trial, said King's case never would have gained the prominence it did without the videotape of his beating.

"If there hadn't been a video there would have never been a case," Braun said. "In those days, you might have claimed excessive force but there would have been no way to prove it."

The video also sparked an examination of Los Angeles police tactics under then-Police Chief Daryl Gates.

"The Rodney King beating stands as a landmark in the recent history of law enforcement, comparable to the Scottsboro case in 1931 and the Serpico case in 1967," said a July 1991 report produced by an independent commission led by Warren Christopher, who later became Secretary of State.

The report determined that despite many good officers, there were "a significant number of officers in the LAPD who repetitively use excessive force against the public."

Despite that scrutiny, the department continued to face scandals and critics of its practices until the U.S. government intervened. The department operated under a decade-long consent decree with the U.S. Justice Department' civil rights division to implement reforms on how it uses force and handles complaints; the department also gained more civilian oversight. The decree wasn't formally lifted until 2009.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, who knew King for years, said he was more of a victim than a hero, and that his death reminded the nation of how far it still needs to go.

Gardea described King as a quiet neighbor until Sunday morning. Cory Hudson, King's cousin who lives nearby, said King enjoyed swimming and was known to get into the pool at night.

"It's just sad. I feel bad for all the family members," Hudson said. "It's been rough. And he was just getting his life really together."

Braun, the attorney saw King as "a sad figure swept up into something bigger than he was.

"He wasn't a hero or a villain."
