(AP) ? Furry little Punxsutawney (puhnk-suh-TAW'-nee) Phil is ready to make his annual appearance out of Gobbler's Knob in west-central Pennsylvania.

Groundhog Day is Saturday, and the community is holding its welcome-back bash for the famous winter-weather prognosticator ? the so-called seer of seers and sage of sages.

Legend has it that if the groundhog sees his shadow on Feb. 2, winter will last six more weeks. No shadow means an early spring.

Phil's got company. Groundhogs in Atlanta, New York, and Ontario also make predictions.

But Punxsutawney partisans say Phil is the original and the best. The 1993 movie "Groundhog Day" starring Bill Murray brought the Pennsylvania rodent even more notoriety.

Organizers say about 20,000 people are expected this weekend, a larger-than-normal crowd because Groundhog Day falls on a weekend this year.

Gilead hungers for more cancer drug deals - FierceBiotech

Gilead Sciences ($GILD) waves an active trigger finger for acquisitions. After loading up on cancer drugs through a number of deals in recent years, the biopharma powerhouse is looking for new targets, Bloomberg reported. And Gilead's interest in blood-cancer drugs sparked some speculation about a couple of likely buyout prospects.

As the news service reported, Gilead has ponied up $1.2 billion in two years to pick up cancer drugs. All those deals involved development-stage candidates from the buyouts of such firms as YM BioSciences and Calistoga Pharmaceuticals. Gilead, which has no marketed cancer drugs and makes most of its revenue from HIV meds, has invested heavily in research of cancer drugs in search of a future revenue stream from the big oncology market.

"Oncology is entering an era where significant advances are going to be made, far above and beyond what's been made previously," John Milligan, Gilead's operations chief, told Bloomberg. "It's a field where there's always the possibility of acquiring other molecules and companies as their technology or pipelines mature. We're certainly keeping our eye on it."

What cancer drug outfit might Gilead look to buy next? Milligan wouldn't say, of course. But Raghuram Selvaraju of Aegis Capital took a shot, saying that possible targets could include Ariad Pharmaceuticals ($ARIA) and Infinity Pharmaceuticals ($INFI). In December Ariad won FDA approval for Iclusig (ponatinib) for certain cases of chronic myeloid leukemia, and boasts a market cap of $3.34 billion that reflects the big expectations for the drug. ?

With no approved drugs, Infinity might be more akin to previous companies that Gilead scooped up. It's all just speculation right now, however.

Yet Gilead has the deep pockets and the track record in HIV to compete in the market for blood cancer drugs. And the Foster City, CA-based company could certainly pull the trigger on more sizable oncology buyouts. ?

Obama Honors Astronauts Who Gave Their Lives for Space

President Barack Obama paid tribute to the seven astronauts who died in the space shuttle Columbia accident 10 years ago, along with all of those who lost their lives in the pursuit of space, in a statement released today (Feb. 1).

"Space exploration and the sacrifice these pioneers made benefits us all," Obama said in the statement. "Today, we honor their lives and recommit ourselves to living up to their shining example."

NASA held a ceremony today commemorating the loss of Columbia and its crew, as well as the deaths of seven astronauts when the shuttle Challenger was destroyed shortly after liftoff on Jan. 28, 1986, and the tragic Apollo 1 capsule ground fire on Jan. 27, 1967, which took the lives of three astronauts.

"We will never forget these astronauts nor all those who have lost their lives carrying out our missions of exploration," NASA administrator Charles Bolden said in a statement. "These explorers, and their families, have our deepest respect. We work every day to honor and build on their legacy and create the best space program in the world ? to infuse it with the life and vitality that they worked so hard to achieve." [Columbia Shuttle Disaster Explained (Infographic)]

Obama reiterated his support for NASA's past achievements, as well as for its future, which includes building a new spacecraft and heavy-lift rocket to take people to the moon, asteroids and Mars.

"As we undertake the next generation of discovery, today we pause to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice on the journey of exploration," Obama said. "Right now we are working to fulfill their highest aspirations by pursuing a path in space never seen before, one that will eventually put Americans on Mars."

The president acknowledged that space remains a difficult, risky business, but one worth pursuing.

"The exploration of space represents one of the most challenging endeavors we undertake as a nation," Obama said. "Whether it's landing a 1-ton rover on Mars, building a space telescope 100 times more powerful than the Hubble, or preparing to send humans beyond the Moon, it's imperative America continues to lead the world in reaching for the stars while giving us a better understanding of our home planet."

Many in NASA were working for the agency at the time of the Challenger shuttle accident, and even more were there for the Columbia disaster. For those who knew the crews personally, and worked alongside them, the anniversaries are especially poignant.

"Today, I laid wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery for these fallen heroes, and at the Kennedy Space Center, wreaths were laid at the Space Mirror Memorial. Across the country, all flags at NASA Headquarters and the NASA centers will be flown at half-mast in memory of our colleagues lost in the cause of exploration," Bolden said. "And while those gestures will signify to the nation and the world that we have not forgotten, as we look to the future, we will each remember in our own personal way our colleagues and friends, and what their work meant to us. Together we will carry them with us in our hearts as we propel ourselves to the next big horizon and make their dreams reality."

(AP) ? Three suspected jihadists arrested in the days since they liberated the town of Timbuktu said Friday that Malian soldiers were torturing them with a method similar to waterboarding.

The three are being held in an earthen cell in what remains of the military camp in Timbuktu, which was liberated earlier this week by French and Malian soldiers after nearly 10 months under the rule of radical Islamists.

The men, who were tied together with a turban and one handcuff, all acknowledged to The Associated Press having been members of the al-Qaida-linked group known as Ansar Dine, or Defenders of the Faith.

"To force me to talk they poured 40 liters of water in my mouth and over my nostrils which made it so that I could not breathe anymore. For a moment I thought I was even going to die," said one of the men, who gave his name as Ali Guindo and said he was from a village near the central Malian town of Niono.

"I sleep in the cold and every night they come pour freezing water over me. "

All three prisoners described similar treatment. Their account could not be independently verified. Soldiers holding the three asked reporters to leave after initially allowing journalists to speak with them.

Army Col. Mamary Camara told reporters that the three were arrested by Malian forces in the town of Lere, and he said that one of the men was from Libya and was caught wearing a foreign military uniform.

The Libyan jihadist was visibly frightened, crouching in a corner of his cell. He gave the AP contradictory information about his background, first saying he was born in a Malian village but of Libyan descent.

Later, he said he was from Tripoli but has lived for years in Mali. He initially denied being part of Ansar Dine but later confirmed that he belonged to the movement though he denied having an important role.

The Malian military said that when he was arrested he was wearing a watch with a memory card inside that they said was used to communicate with other foreign jihadists.

The allegations of torture made public Friday in Timbuktu come as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International released reports Friday outlining other allegations of misconduct by the Malian military over the last month.

Amnesty International cited witnesses saying the Malian army had arrested more than 24 civilians on the eve of the French-led intervention on Jan. 11. Amnesty says it is feared that many were later killed by soldiers and some bodies were thrown down a well in Sevare. The Associated Press had earlier reported killings of civilians by the Malian army in Sevare, with bodies dumped in a well.

The Malian government has promised to investigate allegations of human rights abuses by its soldiers.

France has said that it eventually wants to hand over responsibility for the mission to the Malian army and other African counterparts.
