NEW ORLEANS, April 7, 2013 Renowned for its cuisine and chefs and as a global hub of the energy industry, New Orleans this week hosts what news media have described as the "World Series of Science," one of the year's largest and most important scientific conferences. The meeting, which begins today and continues through Thursday, happens to have the theme "CHEF," which stands for "The Chemistry of Energy and Food."

More than 14,000 scientists and others are expected to gather in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center and downtown hotels for the 245th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the world's largest scientific society. It features almost 12,000 reports and other presentations on scientific topics that involve chemistry. These range from astronomy to zoology, and include medicine, health, global climate change, sustainable supplies of clean drinking water, environment, new materials, electronics, business and of course the quest for new, sustainable sources of energy and a healthier, more abundant food supply. The meeting includes a major exposition of scientific instruments, publications and other resources.

In addition to pushing back the horizons of scientific knowledge, the meeting will leave a positive mark on the regional economy, according to Tara Letort of the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau. Letort cited projections that it will add at least $16 million to the local economy.

"News media are on target in calling our meetings the World Series of Science," said Marinda Li Wu, Ph.D., ACS president. "In terms of the number of reports on new discoveries that connect with everyday life, the attendance, the range of scientific topics and the caliber of the attendees, these are major events. During the next week, the concentration of scientific brainpower in a few square blocks of New Orleans will be exceptional."

James N. Seiber, Ph.D., program chair, said that thousands of the scientific reports relate to the meeting's core theme, CHEF. Organizers of the ACS' two annual National Meetings seek themes that connect with the venues' geography, history, culture or other attributes.

"New Orleans is internationally renowned for its cuisine," said Seiber, professor emeritus of chemistry at the University of California at Davis and editor of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, one of the ACS' more than 40 peer-reviewed scientific journals. "And the Gulf Coast is a hub of the global energy industry, a major producer of crude oil and natural gas and the petrochemicals used to make medicines, plastics, clothing, electronics and thousands of other products that underpin everyday life."

Sessions 64 in all related to the theme carry titles that include "The Chemistry of the Bar," "Analytical Chemistry of the Deepwater Horizon Spill," "Biofuels and Sustainable Energy," the "Nexus of Food, Energy and Water" and, of course, the "Chemistry of Energy and Food."

Keynote speakers for the meeting:

  • Peter Schieberle, Ph.D., Technical University of Munich: The chemistry of food flavors: Simply pleasure or beyond?
  • John Floros, Ph.D., Kansas State University: Feeding the world through science and technology: A look into our future food system
  • Csar Vega, Ph.D., Mars, Incorporated: The kitchen as laboratory: Building bridges between science and the non-scientist
  • Walter Rakitsky, Ph.D., Solazyme, Inc.: Microalgal triglyceride oils: A new source of renewable oil for energy and food

Special lectures sponsored by the Kavli Foundation will be among the highlights on April 8. Christy Haynes, Ph.D., University of Minnesota, will deliver the inaugural Kavli Foundation Emerging Leader in Chemistry Lecture. The Emerging Leaders Lectures recognize the work of outstanding young chemical scientists. Daniel G. Nocera, Ph.D., Harvard University, will deliver the "Kavli Foundation Innovations in Chemistry Lecture," updating progress in developing his "artificial leaf."

News media can register onsite for credentials to cover the meeting in Room 215-216 of the Morial Convention Center, where press conferences will be held starting at 8 a.m. today. A package of press releases and a press conference schedule are available from the news media contacts above. News media also can join live press conferences at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/acslive.

Same-Sex Marriage: An Illogical Counterfeit

By Richard Larsen on Apr 06, 2013 in Politics

Two cases were argued before the U.S. Supreme Court last week addressing the issue of same-sex marriage. This is not an issue of rights, as proponents maintain, nor is it an issue of Biblical marriage, as opponents contend. It is, rather, based in natural law, and is an issue of seismic significance to our culture, our society, and our civilization, and cannot be cavalierly ?redefined.?

Dr. Patrick Fagan, a sociologist and psychologist has said, ?The family is the fundamental building block of society and predates the state and even the societies it builds? At the heart of the family is the mother and father who bring their children into existence.? This is a self-evident truth, regardless of who said it, and anthropologists, biologists, sociologists, and politicians have reiterated that very sentiment. The family is the building block of society and civilization, and the cornerstone to that foundation, or the genesis of it, is a mother and a father.

Foundations must be strong, and built to withstand the elements, corrosion, and the test of time. Otherwise, the structure built thereon will inevitably crumble. If a foundation is made with unmixed cement or just water, as same-sex marriage tries to do, the foundation is weak, and the structure (our civilization) built thereon will crumble. When we tamper with, and attempt to socially-engineer the foundational elements and institutions to civilization and our society, the results will be destructive.

Redefining marriage based on who one purportedly loves, is a spurious dilution of our societal foundation. Rarely in human history, has marriage been based on who one loves, but has always been about perpetuating the species, and forming familial units that construct the foundation to civilization. Sometimes it?s included multiple spouses of one sex or another, but always it has been based on propagational properties, whether age or fertility exceptions apply or not. Any semantic change to the definition is only that, semantic, and does not change the biological or anthropological verities etymologically embedded in the term. Such a change to accommodate same-sex ?marriage? would therefore be nothing more than creating a verbal counterfeit to the real thing. Simply calling my Tahoe a Hummer is a lie, and does not change the fact that it?s still not a Hummer.

Nor is there a ?right? to marry whomsoever or whatsoever we please, or profess love for. Such a right is as most other ?rights? claimed by those in our society who feel somehow shortchanged, slighted, or disadvantaged. The ?right? is not codified in any legal document, much less our founding documents, just like the ?right? to health care, or the ?right? to a good job. Heterosexual marriage, however, is codified in natural law, as attested by biological and anthropological fact. The test is simple: try building a civilization or a society from scratch with anything other than natural law, heterosexual marriage.

Marriage, historically, has always represented the legal, moral, and cultural recognition of the binding relationship of opposite sexes. Merely definitionally reducing marriage to nothing more than a state legitimized relationship between ?people that love each other? is antithetical to the factual basis to our existence as a civilization. The fact is, marriage has always been about protecting society, at least in part, through the possibility of propagation, protection and the creation of family units.

The law of unintended consequences has certainly been manifest elsewhere as natural law, social mores, and societal conventions and institutions like marriage have been redefined and engineered to accommodate exceptions.

Scandinavian countries that have redefined marriage are experiencing a meltdown of traditional marriage. British demographer David Coleman and senior Dutch demographer Joop Garssen have written that ?marriage is becoming a minority status? in Scandinavia. In Denmark, a slight majority of all children are still born within marriage. Yet citing the 60 percent out-of-wedlock birthrate for firstborn children, Danish demographers Wehner, Kambskard, and Abrahamson argue that marriage has ceased to be the normative setting for Danish family life and poses a significant risk to the future stability of Danish society.

There are undoubtedly exogenous contributory factors for the Scandinavian states. But the eradication of natural law and social mores in favor of a politically correct or supposedly amoral redefinition of basic social conventions indisputably are the incipient causes to the unraveling of the family unit.

Mark Regnerus, a sociologist at the University of Texas at Austin, recently said,??I think you can have social stability without many intact families, but it?s going to be really expensive and it?s going to look very ?Huxley-Brave New World-ish.? So [the intact family is] not only the optimal scenario ? but it?s the cheapest. How often in life do you get the best and the cheapest in the same package??

Pastor Rick Warren made a fundamentally true and valid observation in this regard. He said, ?Our culture has accepted two huge lies. The first is that if you disagree with someone?s lifestyle, you must fear them or hate them. The second is that to love someone means you agree with everything they believe or do. Both are nonsense. You don?t have to compromise convictions to be compassionate.? Many are the arguments against same-sex marriage, and none of them frankly have anything to do with discrimination or homophobia.

Doug Mainwaring, an avowed homosexual, proves Warren?s assertion. ?Two men or two women together is, in truth, nothing like a man and a woman creating a life and a family together?Marriage is not an elastic term. It is immutable. It offers the very best for children and society. We should not adulterate nor mutilate its definition, thereby denying its riches to current and future generations.?

Words have meaning, and marriage, as the cornerstone to civilization, is copiously imbued with it. I have yet to hear a logical or cogent explanation as to why a binding homosexual relationship must be a marriage as opposed to a civil union or legal partnership. Rather than weakening and diluting the foundation to our society, we should be strengthening and encouraging it. After all, our future, and stability, as a society is dependent on it.

Apple CEO Tim Cook Apologizes to Chinese Consumers

Apple CEO Tim Cook releases an apology to Chinese customers concerning their customer service and repairs, and mentions many forthcoming improvements.

Apple has yet again released an apology, this time to the people of China concerning their?warranty?policies, or lack thereof. The controversy?concerning?their?warranty?policy?for Chinese customers has been growing recently, with?unclear?small print about the?conditions, botched repair works, and a general low quality of standard.?

The letter, which can be seen on the website here, was signed by CEO Tim Cook. It mentioned many?forthcoming?improvements?to the quality of service. Among these?improvements?are clearer policy?statements, increased staff training and supervision, and a more streamlined channel of?communication?between the customer and Apple Feedback?Service. They also have?upcoming?plans to improve the methods by which?iPhone?4 and 4S repairs are handled?and?executed.

A week before the letter was released, the Chinese state media was in the process of openly criticizing Apple and their?handling?of complaints, calling them "Arrogant" in their attitude towards Chinese customers and insinuating that they evade local taxes and preach their innocence in the face of incriminating evidence.?

The letter responds to those claims by stating that Apple is aware that a lack of external communication on their part has led to these speculations, and that they offer both a?sincere?apology and?guarantee?that things will be set right. As the Chinese market is a huge asset to Apple both in the form of production and sales, it is hardly?surprising?that they issue an official apology addressing these serious?allegations.

Ex-Credit Suisse trader pleads not guilty to MBS price inflation

By Nick Brown

(Reuters) - A former Credit Suisse trader pleaded not guilty on Friday to charges of inflating the prices of subprime mortgage-backed bonds to the tune of $540 million.

Kareem Serageldin, who was extradited to the U.S. by British officials this year, entered his plea at an arraignment in Manhattan federal court, a spokeswoman for the Manhattan U.S. Attorney's office said on Friday evening.

Serageldin, 39, is slated to appear in court again next Friday before Judge Alvin Hellerstein, spokeswoman Julie Bolcer said.

The Swiss bank's former global head of structured credit is accused of artificially inflating the prices of mortgage-backed bonds between August 2007 and February 2008, when the U.S. subprime housing market was collapsing and the bonds were losing value at an alarming rate.

A lawyer for Serageldin could not immediately be reached for comment.

According to the U.S. indictment against him, Serageldin devised the scheme to "enhance his apparent job performance" because he wanted a larger bonus and he knew he was in line for a big promotion.

Before the alleged price manipulation came to light, Credit Suisse awarded him a bonus worth $7 million for his 2007 performance, of which $1.7 million was in cash and $5.3 million in Credit Suisse shares. The bank subsequently took the shares back.

Two of Serageldin's former colleagues who reported to him at the time, David Higgs and Salmaan Siddiqui, pleaded guilty in a U.S. court in February 2012 to charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and falsify books and records.

Liberals to Obama: not so fast on Social Security cuts

The worst fears of progressive groups were confirmed Friday: President Obama's budget will include cuts to Social Security. But the call has gone out, and liberals are fighting back.?

By Linda Feldmann,?Staff writer / April 5, 2013

President Barack Obama speaks at the Police Academy in Denver on Wednesday. A senior administration official said Friday that Obama's proposed budget will call for reductions in in the growth of federal Social Security pensions and other benefit programs in an attempt to strike a compromise with congressional Republicans.

Liberal groups issued a primal scream Friday over the news that President Obama?s budget next week will include cuts to Social Security.

The president is proposing a new formula to calculate inflation, called ?chained CPI,? effectively reducing annual increases in the payments to most seniors. This would come as part of a compromise on deficit reduction with Republicans that would also include higher taxes on the wealthy and increased spending on some domestic programs such as infrastructure.

But to progressive advocacy groups, compromising upfront on social safety-net programs equals surrender, and they will have none of that. Supporters? (and reporters?) in-boxes exploded Friday with indignant reactions and suggestions of betrayal. Petitions are circulating. Funds are being raised.

Mr. Obama may have stuck his hand in a hornet?s nest, but having been safely reelected, he may feel he can take the gamble of alienating some of his supporters in the name of trying to reach a deal. But voices on the left disagree.

?The president?s decision to include cuts to Social?Security?benefits in his budget is wrong policy and dumb politics,? writes Roger Hickey, co-director of the Campaign for America?s Future (CAF). ?His chained CPI plan is wrong because it hurts Americans who have worked hard their entire lives and who need the support that Social?Security gives them. It is wrong because Social?Security?is financed separately and does not contribute to the deficit.?

It is ?dumb? politically, Mr. Hickey continues, because now Republicans will call chained CPI a Democratic proposal and will attack Democrats in the next election for trying to cut Social Security.

In another e-mail, CAF made a pitch for donations. ?Social Security represents America at its best, and now it is up to you to defend it,? writes the group?s other co-director, Robert Borosage.

MoveOn.org and former Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich released a video and petition Friday urging Obama to drop chained CPI and propose instead a higher cap?on?income subject to Social Security taxes.

?Social Security is not driving the deficit; therefore it should not be part of reforms aimed at cutting the deficit. The chained CPI, deceptively portrayed as a reasonable cost of living adjustment, is a cut to Social Security that would hurt seniors,? Mr. Reich says.?

?There are several sensible reforms to Social Security that should be considered to help make it sustainable, including lifting the ceiling?on?income subject to Social Security from $113,700 to $200,000 or more, as well as instituting a 1 percent raise in the payroll tax rate, a rate that hasn't changed in over 20 years,? Reich adds.

Jim Dean, chairman of Democracy for America ? and brother of former Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean ? called the news that Obama?s budget would include cuts to Social Security ?a shot across the bow for the progressives who called their neighbors, spent weekends knocking doors, and donated millions to reelect him.???

An e-mail from Mr. Dean links to a petition aimed at Congress.

?President Obama thinks Democrats will fall in line behind these proposals,? Dean continues. ?If we can show that there is enormous opposition to these Social?Security?cuts, we can pressure Democrats in Congress to take these devastating cuts off the table.?

Where the liberal outrage will lead is uncertain. There?s plenty in Obama?s forthcoming budget that the Republicans have already rejected out of hand, including more tax increases after those they conceded in the Dec. 31 "fiscal cliff" deal. ?

Political analysts already see the chances of a grand bargain on deficit reduction between Obama and the Republicans as a long shot. So maybe the hyperpartisanship of Washington will keep chained CPI from becoming a reality. But in the progressive world, nobody?s taking any chances.?
