With today?s teachers and students joining social networks it?s not hard for either the teacher or the students to be caught up in the moment and forget that even though joining is education related, you are at the mercy of the social network not your school when it comes to your security on the site.? They have the say so.? They make the rules, they cause the problems when private information is leaked.? They also cause the problems of pictures that were meant to stay on your profile to be distributed to the masses on the Internet.? Yes you can take every precaution there is available to you on the social network.? But that is no guarantee it will stay private.?

Humans can be a silly species

You see? Humans are a peculiar bunch of individuals.? They tend to forget the past very easily when things go wrong, and information is leaked all over the Internet.?? They have this idea that they are invincible.? ?No! that wont happen to me, that will never happen to me.??? But the crazy thing is it?s probably already happen to them, they just ignored it, or put it in the back of their mind.?? Has it happened to you?? Yes it has.? When Facebook had their not so little glitch hundreds or thousands of members that had their profiles private were open to the public for the whole world to see.? The crazy thing that happen next was instead of people leaving in droves, they chose to stay, and Facebook got a spike in new memberships.

Before you go saying that the glitch was just a minor incident.? Just remember there has been many of these glitches.? You can see one here, and here there is this one, plus this one.? CBS said it best when they published an article on this very topic.? They listed several ways your profile can be at risk on Facebook.

Meanwhile back at home people are totally ignorant to what just happen to them .? But the fact is the risks on Facebook have happened time and time again.

Woe Education

Here comes educators signing up in droves followed by their students signing up in droves too.? It?s a cool thing to sign up at Facebook.? Yes I know the lure in doing this.? Everyone wants to be popular.? Everyone including the pet has an account on Facebook.? Babies have accounts too.? The last baby I saw on Facebook the parents were downright stupid.? If I could of reached through my monitor and slapped them I would of.? Why you ask?? Because the idiots put their child?s full name on the profile.? Plus the address, and the parents (full) names.? Why is this so bad?? Identity theft.? The thief has all the information they need thanks to the kids parents.? Of course this wont affect the parents ever not until baby grows up and hits the streets on their own, and finds out someone has been using their name and address for seventeen or eighteen years.? Now grown baby can?t get a College loan.

Anyways?enough of Facebook lets get back to education

They don?t care you are just a needle in a hay stack.? Facebook could lose hundreds of thousands of members next week, and it would not faze them.? They have over a billion members.

The truth is?

You need only to post as little as possible private information.? Use an old address, don?t be posting your wage earnings, don?t be flashy with what you own.? No full names.? Do not tag photos. No school names,? Leave those maps alone if you post often to those someone could eventually figure out where you live.? If you must use the maps use a time delay.? Like post after you have left, or have gotten home.? Not every time you go out. Use no maiden names.? Don?t upload your official signature.?? Try not to post pictures that have expensive valuables in the background.? No mascots, bus numbers, phone numbers, home address. Lets do our best to keep our students, and teachers safe on social networks.

SD festival drawing filmmakers to middle America - Centre Daily Times

ABERDEEN, S.D. ? It's a Friday night on Main Street in the small northern South Dakota town of Aberdeen, and it's supposedly a hopping one with the marquee event of the annual South Dakota Film Festival being held at the historic Capitol Theater.

And yet, the street is nearly empty. The chirping of crickets is only occasionally disturbed by passing cars or pedestrians. Cannes or Sundance, this is not.

Some might consider it an unfortunate side effect of being, well, in the middle of nowhere in South Dakota, in a town hugged by corn fields and the closest "big cities" - Fargo, Bismarck, Sioux Falls and Pierre - each being about three hours away.

But Tom Black doesn't see it that way.

"We're not the middle of nowhere. We're the middle of everywhere," said Black, a co-producer of the South Dakota Film Festival, which this weekend is in its sixth year.

Looking at a map, he's just about right. As long as film goers don't mind that cattle outnumber local residents, Aberdeen is pretty close to being smack dab in the middle of the country.

And it's that central location that has grown the small-town festival into a filmmakers' favorite, consistently drawing hundreds of people into the quaint-but-spacious theater each of the event's four days.

It's gotten so big, in fact, that organizers said they might need to spread to other downtown locations in the next year or two.

"It's charming here. It's a great theater," said Mike Scholtz, 42, of Minnesota, whose latest documentary "Wild Bill's Run" has won awards at both the South Dakota and Seattle film festivals. The "arctic crime caper" also has been accepted into the better-known Mountain Film Festival in Canada's Banff, Alberta.

"A lot of festivals are in hotel conference rooms, or just spaces that aren't as nice for film watching. This is a really nice space for it," Scholtz said.

Indeed, the Capitol Theater is the stuff of theatres past. Inside the lobby is an ornate chandelier and restored 1920s organ. The theater itself is adorned with turn-of-the-century embellishments and balcony seating. The screen pulls down over a true stage, one that's used for live performances by the Aberdeen Community Theatre.

It's a space Penny Stolsmark of Pierpont, S.D., has known since childhood - but Friday marked the first time she and her husband have visited for the film festival.

"We had to come. We've never been to this before, but we always wanted to," Stolsmark said. "We're big moviegoers. I'm thinking if we really like it tonight, we might VIP it next year."

What drew Stolsmark to this year's festival wasn't a new film, but rather one celebrating its 20th anniversary: "Thunderheart" starring Val Kilmer and Native American actor Graham Greene. Greene is arguably best known for his role in another South Dakota-filmed movie, "Dances With Wolves," for which he was nominated for a best supporting actor Academy Award.

The showing, followed by a question-and-answer period with Greene, was to be one of the festival's highlights.

Saturday is to feature a preview of upcoming films made in South Dakota, a six-minute silent flick called "Bus 1107," a horror film called "Werewolf in a Girls Sorority," and what Black describes as this year's big get: "Butter," a film starring Jennifer Garner that won't be widely released until Oct. 5.

And that's just a sampling. About 100 filmmakers entered their works; about half of those were accepted, organizers said. Many of the films have cast or crew from the Upper Great Plains.

"We'll tear about 1,000 tickets over the course of the weekend," Black said.

Scholtz, who made his first film in 1997, said Aberdeen - population 27,000 - will continue to lure him because it's a "filmmakers' festival."

"Everyone in the film community in the Midwest is aware of the festival," he said. "Average people won't have heard of it, but they have a really good reputation with filmmakers."

Black said that while the festival is heavy on Great Plains artists, it also draws filmmakers from Florida, Washington state, Washington D.C., and the rest of the country. People don't just love showing their work in South Dakota, he said, they like making it here, too.

Not only does the state offer the picturesque landscape that made "Wolves" star Kevin Costner a lifelong fan, but it's cheap for film workers, Black said. South Dakota doesn't have the income tax, union labor or hefty sales tax of some other states, he said.

"You may think Chicago isn't the middle of nowhere, but it takes a lot longer to get to Chicago for most people," Black said. "We're actually the perfect place."

Capita acquires business travel firm Expotel - ComputerworldUK.com

Outsourcer Capita has acquired UK hotel, business travel and conference booking agent Expotel Group for ?16 million.

Capita said the acquisition will "add reach and scale" to its existing operations in the business travel market and offer additional events and meetings management capabilities.

Expotel's current clients include National Grid, Virgin Media, the Scottish government and BP. Expotel made a pro forma operating profit for its financial year to 31 October 2011 of ?3.2 million on a turnover of ?16.3 million.

Paul Pindar, chief executive of Capita, said, "Expotel will bring both significant additional expertise and greater scale to our UK-focused corporate travel business."

Pindar said Expotel combined with its existing travel business would employ nearly 900 staff in ten locations. "With the public sector needing to drive down travel and subsistence costs, the business will be in a strong position to help local and central government achieve these aims," said Pindar.

John O'Brien, an analyst at TechMarketView, said, "Pindar is focusing his attention on the company's true knitting, IT-enabled business process services.

"In the public sector in particular there should be plenty of potential to drive out cost from travel and venue hiring."

Capita also acquired business travel firm BSI Holdings in December 2010, which provides travel services for Marks and Spencer, EasyJet and the Crown Prosecution Service.

Earlier this week it was reported that Mark Quartermaine, recruited just six months ago as managing director of Capita?s newly created IT Services operation, had left the company to join Juniper Networks as UK head of operations.
